The Royal Spoonbill – Built for the Shallows

I photographed this Royal Spoonbill while visiting Centenary Lakes. What caught my attention straight away was that remarkable bill — it certainly gives this bird its name!

I spent some time watching it move through the shallow water, sweeping its bill from side to side as it searched for food. It was fascinating to watch, and I was lucky enough to capture a moment when it lifted its bill from the water, sending droplets flying.

Getting a closer look through the camera also revealed details that are easy to miss from a distance — particularly the colourful markings around the eyes and face, contrasting beautifully with its white plumage.

It’s encounters like this that I enjoy most about wildlife photography. Taking the time to stop and observe often reveals behaviours and details that you might otherwise walk straight past. 📷
