Meet Mr. Jack, my latest reluctant photography model!
This time, I decided to try something a little different with my macro lens. Rather than photographing insects or tiny creatures, I wanted to capture the beautiful detail in Jack’s amber eyes.
Sounds simple enough, doesn’t it?
Well, Jack had other ideas!
Armed with my camera and diffuser, I got into position and gave him a simple instruction.
“Jack, look at me!”
And to his credit, he did!
For about three seconds.
Just as i managed to get his eye perfectly in focus, Jack would suddenly turn his head. Apparently, keeping an eye on the neighbourhood and checking for potential barking opportunities was far more important than posing for photographs.
So, there I was again.
“Jack, look at me!”
Another brief moment of cooperation, another attempt to focus, and another sudden head movement!
Before long, I had collected quite a few blurry photographs and was beginning to realise that Mr. Jack wasn’t particularly interested in a modelling career.
But persistence eventually paid off.
After numerous attempts, I managed to capture five photographs that revealed something fascinating.

Looking closely at Jack’s eyes, I could see much more than their beautiful amber colour. Reflected in their glossy surfaces were tiny details of the world around us – part of my car, my diffuser and the surrounding trees. Even the fine hairs around his eyebrow were visible in remarkable detail.
It was like discovering a miniature world inside his eye.

That’s one of the things I enjoy most about macro photography. It allows us to notice details that we might otherwise overlook, even in something as familiar as a dog’s eye.
Photographing a moving subject at such close range also reminded me how challenging macro photography can be. With such a shallow depth of field, even the slightest movement can turn a sharp image into a blurry one.

And when your subject is a dog who takes neighbourhood security very seriously, patience becomes just as important as camera settings!
In the end, I’m pleased with the photographs, and I think Jack deserves some credit for his brief moments of cooperation.
Although, judging by his priorities, I don’t think he’ll be giving up his security duties to become a full-time model anytime soon.

Thanks for your patience, Mr. Jack. Same time next week?
